How to Create and Optimize Your Google Business Profile (Step-by-Step)
Your Google Business Profile is the most powerful free marketing tool most local businesses completely ignore. It's the first thing customers see before they call you — and a fully optimized profile can generate more leads than a $500/month ad campaign.
What Is a Google Business Profile and Why Does It Matter?
When someone searches "[your service] near me" or "[your business name]" on Google, the information panel that appears on the right side of the screen (or at the top of mobile results) is your Google Business Profile. It shows your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews, website link, and more.
This profile appears before your website. In many cases, a customer will call you directly from the profile without ever visiting your site. For local businesses, it's the most important piece of digital real estate you own — and it's completely free.
Step 1: Claim or Create Your Profile
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Search for your business name. If it already appears (Google sometimes creates listings automatically), claim it. If it doesn't exist, create it from scratch.
You'll need to verify your business. Google's standard verification method is a postcard sent to your business address with a verification code. This typically arrives within 5-7 days. Don't skip verification — an unverified profile has limited functionality and won't rank well.
Step 2: Fill Out Every Section Completely
Google rewards completeness. Profiles with more information rank better in local search results and convert better when people find them. Work through every section:
Business name
Use your exact legal business name. Don't stuff keywords into your business name ("Joe's Plumbing — Best Plumber in Austin TX") — this violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Your name is your name.
Categories
Your primary category is the most important ranking signal in your profile. Choose the most specific category that describes your main business. Add secondary categories for other services you offer. You can add up to 10 categories — use them all if they're legitimately relevant to your business.
Service area
If you serve customers at their location, define your service area by city, county, or postal code. Be accurate — claiming a service area that's too large can hurt your rankings in the areas you actually serve.
Hours
Set accurate hours and update them for holidays. If you have emergency hours or different hours by service type, use the "More hours" feature to specify them. Nothing frustrates a potential customer more than showing up to a business based on hours that are wrong.
Phone number
Use a local phone number, not a 1-800 or tracking number, as your primary number. Google associates local phone numbers with local relevance. If you use call tracking, add the tracking number as a secondary number.
Website
Link to your actual website. If you have multiple locations, link to the specific location page, not the homepage.
Step 3: Write a Compelling Business Description
You have 750 characters for your business description. Use them. The first 250 characters appear without the user clicking "more," so lead with the most important information: what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different.
Write naturally and include the services you offer and the areas you serve. Don't keyword-stuff. Think of it as a brief pitch to someone who found you on Google and wants to know more: why should they call you instead of the next result?
Step 4: Add Photos (This Matters More Than You Think)
Profiles with photos receive significantly more direction requests and calls than those without. Add:
- Cover photo: A high-quality image that represents your business — your storefront, your team, or your best work
- Logo: Clean, square format, recognizable at small sizes
- Team photos: Real photos of real people build trust fast
- Work photos: Before/after shots, completed projects, products
- Interior/exterior photos: If you have a physical location
Add at least 10 photos when you set up the profile. Then add 1-2 new photos every month. Google factors photo recency into rankings — a profile with recent photos signals an active business.
Step 5: Add Your Services
Use the Services section to list every service you offer with descriptions. This is another signal Google uses to match your profile to relevant searches. A plumbing company that lists "water heater replacement," "drain cleaning," and "pipe repair" separately will appear for each of those searches — not just "plumber."
Include pricing if it's fixed or estimable. Customers who see pricing upfront are better qualified when they call.
Step 6: Use Google Business Profile Posts
GBP posts appear in your profile and in Google search results. They're essentially free advertising placements in your own listing. Post weekly to maintain an active presence — Google rewards it and customers notice it. Use posts for:
- Current promotions or seasonal specials
- New services you're offering
- Customer spotlight or project highlights
- Holiday hours announcements
- Links to recent blog posts or tips
Step 7: Monitor and Respond to Q&A
The Q&A section allows anyone to ask and answer questions about your business. Monitor this weekly — both to answer questions yourself and to flag incorrect answers submitted by others. Populate it proactively by asking and answering your own frequently asked questions. "Do you offer free estimates?" "What areas do you serve?" "Are you licensed and insured?" Answer these before customers have to ask.
Reading Your Insights
Google Business Profile provides insights showing how customers find you (direct search vs. discovery search), what they do when they find you (call, get directions, visit website), and how many times your profile appeared in search results. Check these monthly. If calls are declining, that's a signal — your photos may be stale, your reviews may need attention, or a competitor may be outranking you in your category.
